All the Things I Have Done.

This morning, I sat in my office, sipped my coffee, and looked around, pondering the thoughts that have been in my head all week and which I wanted to dive into for this post. As I sat there, I thought less about the chaos that happened over the past week and became overwhelmingly grateful. 

There are little reminders of the life I built for myself all throughout the room. The books on the shelves remind me of all the knowledge I’ve accumulated. The photos of my dog remind me that my heart is still healing from the loss. The lanyards and name tags from conferences and expos remind me of meeting incredible people from around the U.S. who are passionate about produce. The jewelry box my cousin made reminds me of the times he used to babysit us. It holds the watch my grandma used to always wear, and it reminds me of her. 

I reflect quite a bit, but it’s usually on individual things, like the conversation I had with my uncle, the op-ed I wrote that was published in the paper, the interactions I had with a colleague, or the behaviors of a family member – all things I thought I would be writing about this morning.

But this room in my house tells a story about my life, and I never really took the time to consider the story as a whole. I mostly just reviewed certain chapters. As I had been reflecting on all the things I could have done, the artifacts in this room show me all the things I. have. done. 

The collection may be of things, but many are meaningful items that represent my uniqueness. From the spiritual (bible verse written on a 3×5 card) to the practical (bills that need to be paid), and from the playful (camera and GoPro) to even the little weird (javelina skull), each represents a different area of my life that brings me joy. (Yes, even the bills. They mean I am financially independent with the luxuries of a roof over my head, electricity, and internet.)

It’s so easy to get caught up in the trap of what we think our lives could have or should have been. It’s also easy to get caught up in the “I wish”-es. It’s hard not to compare or want otherwise for yourself, (past or future), based on the influence of others. 

But we were not meant to follow anyone’s path, except for the one God has planned for us. As I reflect on the journey that got me to this point, I can’t help but be reminded that He knows exactly what He is doing. I am where I am supposed to be, and all the things I have done make me who I am today. And the things that I have done are a great reminder that who I am today has limitless potential for tomorrow.

All the Things I Could Have Done.

I mentioned it before, but I’m going to mention it again. When I was young, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I just figured you grow up, get married, and have a family. I didn’t give much thought to what I wanted to pursue in school and a career never really crossed my mind. 

I got a boyfriend a couple of years out of high school, and we stayed together for a few years after that. When we broke up, it was like, “Ok, now what?” I had no degree, worked multiple dead-end jobs, was living paycheck to paycheck, and the life that I thought I was going to have failed before it even got started. 

At that point, I picked myself up and began building my own life and didn’t really stop – until now. Now, I’ve reached this plateau. I achieved all the professional goals I set for myself along the way. Again, I’m back questioning, “Now what?”

But that’s another post for another day. On this plateau, I’ve been looking at what’s in front of me and behind me. Today’s post is about reflecting on the journey that led me here, and would I still be on the same plateau if I took a different path?

Recently, I watched the movie Look Both Ways on Netflix. If you haven’t watched it yet, ‼️spoiler alert‼️. It’s about a young girl who is facing possible pregnancy, and we journey through what her life would look like if she was pregnant and if she wasn’t pregnant. By the end of the story, we see that she essentially reaches the same destination but gets there in very different ways.

To be honest, this movie brought me a lot of comfort. Because lately, all I can seem to think about is all the things I could have done. And would I still be in the same place today?

I have a lot of different interests and most ideas, desires, or fears I don’t share with anyone. Partly because when you share things with people, they have an opinion. And I’m really not interested in hearing theirs. 😬 But when you are young and growing up, you need the support of your family. And because you don’t have much life experience, they guide you, tell you, (or fail to guide or tell you) how to get from Point A to Point B. 

You follow the path they put forth, because that’s the safest way, and they know the trail route. But maybe you would prefer to explore. Maybe you want to take a more challenging path to build resilience and create more impactful memories. Maybe you want to see the waterfall, not the ocean. Maybe you want to lead to see where the path takes you, but they choose to continue guiding you.

While these may seem like caring and loving gestures of a supportive family, they are also secure attachment inhibitors. We need to feel supported to explore, reassured and comforted in that exploration, and safe and protected on our journey or if we fall into danger. We need a safety net, not someone encouraging us to never leave the ground.

When I think of all the things I have done, I can’t help but think that, yes, I would be in the same place. Because in certain cases, I did take the roundabout. For a lighthearted example, I rode horses when I was young and got away from it for about 25 years. Here I am today, again riding horses. 

While part of me feels unsettled like I could have done more, the other part of me feels confident I’m supposed to be where I am. Because I did take a challenging path. I did build resilience. I did create impactful memories. In some cases, I saw the waterfall and the ocean, and I did get to take the lead. 

The picture of what I anticipated that explorative path to look like has been influenced by books, movies, and social media. It has been curated by other peoples’ stories and has left me feeling unfulfilled. But when I take the time to truly reflect on the chapters of my life that have been lived, a complete story emerges that reminds me I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.

Dreams.

I have so many unpublished post drafts in my dashboard, countless others in a Word document, and several others in a Google Drive folder. As always, I’ve been taking some time to reflect. When I read through these posts, it’s an insightful reminder of the emotions felt, lessons learned, and journey taken over the past year.

Many posts do not get published, because my thoughts feel incomplete or I feel the post will be read in standalone judgement rather than in the greater context of who I am and what I write about. I don’t want my thoughts on a specific topic to be taken the wrong way, especially when I am usually always open-minded, inquisitive, generally speaking, and most importantly: still learning.

I wanted to be a writer ever since I can remember. When I look at successful writers and how they got their start through blogging, the story is mostly the same: frequent publishing and sharing – neither of which I really do. They say that to be a professional writer, you need to have been published and paid for your work as a main occupation. Sounds stressful to me, honestly. I want to be comfortable with the words I publish. Topics are usually meaningful, and my thoughts cannot be rushed to reach a deadline.

Dreams change.

Sure, I would love to see my name atop a best seller list. But today, I am content. It’s not a dream I want to chase at this stage of my life, and I am pleased to publish what I want when I want to my handful of readers. (So thank you for stopping by. ☺️)

I’ve actually been feeling professional contentment for a few months now. And can I just tell you how freaking amazing it feels?

A master’s degree was something I kind of always wanted, but never really thought I would get. Done. ✅ And I recently started a new job at the level I had been working so hard to reach. ✅ The milestones I set for myself have been achieved, and at this point, I don’t have anything specific on the horizon. It feels so. incredibly. peaceful. to be able to just enjoy the view. 🌅

But that’s not to say I’m not working on other goals. At Facts from Farmers, we’ve been non-publicly working with growers in our community to do amazing things for our farmworkers. I’ve been spending intentional time with family and friends, and giving myself the grace to know when I won’t be bringing them my best self. And Kali and I have become BFFs while leisurely working on our roping partnership.

This is more for me than it is for you, but it’s okay to plateau. It’s okay to put dreams on hold. It’s also okay to scrap those dreams all together.

I’ve been hustling for 10+ years to get where I am. And truthfully, where I am, isn’t even a dream I knew I had until I started working toward it.

When I intentionally think about when people refer to life as a crazy ride, I can’t help but chuckle how true the statement is. It is full of unexpected twists and turns. There are uphill climbs that you anticipate, where the downward side may be an unexpected drop or a relatively smooth transition. It might be like the Haunted Mansion, where something jumps out and surprises you. It might be like Indiana Jones, when you’re focused on the giant rock coming toward you, but God has other plans and sweeps you away to something else.

I’ve said it time and time again, we learn, we grow, and we change. It would be silly of us to think that our dreams don’t evolve too. But more importantly, we need to recognize when those dreams do change, or diminish, or come true.

Branding.

With the rise of social media, personal branding has become a thing. For awhile, I fell into this branding trap. In promoting agriculture, I became “Lacy Litten – Female Farmer.” It was a brand I was happy to have and promote. But I am not a brand, I am a human being who is constantly changing. Maintaining this Female Farmer brand started to become hard. The mold I created for myself began to crack.

But branding is really nothing new. During adolescence, I went through all the phases: country, surfer, punk – you name it. As I look back, I don’t see these phases as “trying them on for size.” I see them as reflections of emotional expression; a girl trying to find her place in the world, being influenced by movies, TV shows, books, friends, trends, environment, society, school, etc. These phases have given me a colorful life, full of perspective.

Branding is what we do; it is how we identify. Woman. Hunter. Homeowner. Mother. Gardener. Leader. Sister. These labels tell people who we are. It is often not intentionally done, but it becomes emphasized and embraced as we fully live these phases of life. As. We. Should.

A lot of life gets lived during each of these branded phases. They are only considered a phase, because a significant period of time can be reduced to a single identifier: college, marriage, career, childhood. None of these phases are defined solely by education, spouse, title, or age. We look at those words and know that knowledge, wisdom, and experience accumulated. Yet, we seem to judge people for making “dramatic” decisions, forgetting that those choices are a result of growth from those phases.

In August 2020, I wrote about undergoing a transformation. In October 2020, I started grad school, which I mastered July 2021. And in June 2021, I wrote about feeling on the precipice of change.

In August 2021, I accepted a new job, and all of the puzzle pieces are starting to come together. It’s been interesting to see and hear people’s reactions to the changes in my life. These changes are a result of years of growth. They are not rash decisions, but slow, meaningful, thoughtful, and instinctual moves forward.

When decisions, such as new careers, get made, there are pieces of us that we must leave behind. That’s the excitement of growth: out with the old and in with the new. Taking the wisdom, knowledge, and experiences gained, and applying them to new opportunities.

I don’t know what this next phase of life fully looks like or what brand will appear on the outside, but I am eager to find out.

Selfless Leadership.

Leadership is hard, you guys. 😔 I can’t attribute all of my life changes to leadership specifically, but it has played a very large role in shaping my perspective and how I interact/think of others.  Not only have I become a more assertive communicator, but I have heightened self-awareness, higher emotional intelligence, and a much bigger “big picture” approach when analyzing most situations.

It feels like I am constantly making (big and small) sacrifices for the benefit of others, often with little to no reward.  But then, I got to thinking about Jesus.  And living impeccably.  

My assumption was that living impeccably makes life easier; that there would be more happiness.  But that’s not really the case.  Life has definitely gotten harder in many ways.  Although there does seem to be a greater sense of well-being, the complexity of emotions that come with selfless leadership has made me feel (on average) just merely content.  I don’t feel great, but I don’t feel bad either.  I feel just okay.

If living impeccably means to live without sin, and sin is defined as “anything that you do which goes against yourself”, how do I be a selfless leader?  Selfless leadership seems to be nearly constant self-sacrifice.  It seems that living impeccably is the exact opposite of selfless leadership. 

But it’s not.

Naturally, we are very selfless.  It is the influence of others that creates selfishness.  I have loved my Toyota Tacoma for 10 years.  But when my friend got a brand-new Jeep Wrangler, it kind of made me want to trade in the Tacoma.  I was content with what I had, until someone else showed me what I did not have. 

If it is our natural tendency to help others, then not putting others before myself would actually be the sin.  Therefore, living impeccably is. selfless. leadership. 🤯  

As I considered this, I was like, “Shit.  That kind of sucks though.”  Now, I get to go through life building up others while I go without my own desires?  That’s unfair.  At what point do I get rewarded for this selfless behavior? I cannot live miserably to build up others to live impeccably. Does no good deed really go unpunished?

Then I realized that perhaps our reward doesn’t come here on earth.  I think part of me has been seeking reward through the instant gratification we have culturally (and generationally) become accustomed to.  But if I look at this through the much bigger “big picture”, it completely makes sense that the reward is within something bigger than ourselves.

Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, whether neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.

Mathew 6:19

Contentment is satisfaction.  And so is selfless leadership.  It may bring me a tinge of pain to go without my wants or needs, but knowing I have helped someone else achieve their goals comes with a great deal of pride in their efforts.  It’s a balance of positive and negative. ⚖️ But really, the positive outweighs the negative, because there is additional satisfaction in knowing I did the right thing.  My heart was in the right place, and that is my treasure.  

I’m not seeking reward in monetary or possessional gains.  I don’t even know what kind of reward I had been seeking.  But if “Godliness with contentment is great gain” (1 Timothy 6:6), then I’ve already claimed my reward.

Truth.

The truth can hurt.  That is fact.  But wouldn’t you rather know the truth than believe a lie or lie by omission?  I would.  Not knowing and feelings of uncertainty can linger for as long as something is being avoided.  I don’t want to live in discomfort indefinitely.  I would rather quick pain of the truth, so I can feel it, and move on from it.  Rip the Band-Aid off. 🩹 Quick and painful is better than slow and painful.  Yeah?

I do believe “the truth will set you free,” but I also believe some people “can’t handle the truth.”  This is true of myself too.  We cannot control our emotional reaction, but we can manage that emotion.  And some of us manage our emotions better than others.

I recently got news that I didn’t want to hear.  But it told me where I stood, and I appreciated that.  While I’m still hurting a bit from this truth, there are no hard feelings.  I’m not angry at this person for expressing his opinion.  In reflection, I agree with him, though it wasn’t a truth I was ready to face. 

I also had to give someone else some news he didn’t want to hear.  He was definitely disappointed. But instead of acknowledging that I have permission to feel what I feel and form opinions/make decisions accordingly, he got angry with me.  This was obviously a truth he wasn’t ready to face.

I think there are several factors that contributed to the different reactions in each situation: maturity, emotional intelligence, importance of relationship, and credibility, to name a few.  But at the end of the day, we have to do what is best for ourselves.  We must speak our truth.  How someone else handles it is on them.  

Although the news I received was news I didn’t to hear, how can I be angry with someone for speaking his truth?  I can’t. He has his own path to follow leading to an impeccable life.  And yeah, it hurt for a while, but the courage he had to speak his truth actually turned out better for me too.  And for the guy who didn’t like my truth and got angry with me? Well, it’s really no longer my problem. 😬 

We can take this truth concept back to ethos, pathos, and logos too. Truth in logic makes sense.  There is tangible evidence to substantiate opinion.  But truth in emotion eludes us.  We only have trust to substantiate opinion.  There’s nothing tangible for us to grasp. Which, I think is why we must have faith that it all works out in accordance to a greater plan. ✝️
